Palekh

Village of Palekh
   Nearly 200 miles northeast of Moscow lies the ancient village of Palekh, famed for centuries as a major center of icon painting. Lying far from major highways and surrounded by the legendary beauty of the Russian countryside, it is here that the traditions of Russian art have been preserved, a rich heritage passed on from one generation to the next.
   Employing a palette of strikingly brilliant colors, painters here do not use oil paints, but mix their own tempera pigments with the yolk of an egg.
    The beauty of this village in Central Russia is known around the world through the masterful and inspired work of its artists, who carry on the glory of an artistic tradition more than five centuries old.
