Fedoskino
Village of Fedoskino
Lacquer work has been a traditional occupation of the craftsmen and artists of the village of Fedoskino. Located near Moscow, the roots of Fedoskino's involvement in the art of the lacquered minature reach back to the enterprise of an 18th century merchant who purchased serfs and set them to the task of producing lacquer boxes.
The use of diluted oil paint, typically applied in several layers, is distinctive of Fedoskino pieces, as is the use of mother-of-pearl, pure gold or silver leaf under segments of the background to create the effect of shimmering glow or silvery sparkle.
